Heating the Gas in Photodissociation Fronts

چکیده

ISO has provided us with a new perspective on gas temperatures in photodissociation regions through measurements of line emission from rotationallyexcited levels of H2. The H2 rotational level populations provide a thermal probe, showing that gas temperatures Tgas ≈ 500 − 1000K prevail in a portion of the PDR where significant H2 is present. Such high gas temperatures were unexpected. Theoretical models for the S140 PDR are presented. Possible mechanisms for heating the gas to such high temperatures are discussed.

Observations of H2 line emission have revealed higher-than-expected gas temperatures in a number of photodissociation fronts. We discuss the heating and cooling processes in photodissociation regions. Observations of NGC 2023 are compared to a theoretical model in which there is substantial gas at temperatures T = 500− 1000K heated by photoelectric emission and collisional deexcitation of H2. Non-equilibrium Photodissociation Regions: Ionization-dissociation Fronts

We discuss the theory of coupled ionization{dissociation fronts produced when molecular clouds are exposed to < 1110 A radiation from hot stars. A steady, composite structure is developed, which generally includes an ionized outtow away from the cloud, an ionization front, a layer of photodissociated gas, a photodissociation front, and a shock wave preceding the photodissociation front. We show...

Photodissociation of conformer-selected ubiquitin ions reveals site-specific cis/trans isomerization of proline peptide bonds.

Ultraviolet photodissociation (UVPD) of gas-phase proteins has attracted increased attention in recent years. This growing interest is largely based on the fact that, in contrast to slow heating techniques such as collision induced dissociation (CID), the cleavage propensity after absorption of UV light is distributed over the entire protein sequence, which can lead to a very high sequence cove...

On the formation of cold fronts in massive mergers

Using adiabatic hydrodynamical simulations, we follow the evolution of two symmetric cold fronts developing in the remnant of a violent z = 0.3 massive cluster merger. The structure and location of the simulated cold fronts are very similar to those recently found in X-ray cluster observations, supporting the merger hypothesis for the origin of at least some of the cold fronts. The cold fronts ...

Cold Fronts in Cdm Clusters

Recently, high-resolution Chandra observations revealed the existence of very sharp features in the Xray surface brightness and temperature maps of several clusters (Vikhlinin et al., 2001). These features, called “cold fronts”, are characterized by an increase in surface brightness by a factor ∼> 2 over 10-50 kpc, accompanied by a drop in temperature of a similar magnitude. The existence of su...
